Its economy is characterized by its dominant tourism, agriculture and light industries. The agricultural, tourism, export-oriented manufacturing and offshore-banking sectors are now taking a larger role in the country's economy. The country has also developed a successful apparel industry with one of the largest assembly operations in the Caribbean.
St. Kitts and Nevis were ruled by Britain until 1983 when they gained their independence and formed the twin- island Federation. It is a well functioning democracy based on Britain's parliamentary system with the head of the state being the Queen of England.
